NOVI, Mich. -- The RM Auctions spring, 2007 special vehicle auction at the Rock Financial Center in Novi attracted sellers, buyers and just-lookers. Over 110 vehicles were sold - about one-half the number offered. The highest sale of the April 28-29 event was a 1969 Dodge Hemi Coronet R/T convertible, which set its new owner back $220,000 (plus auction costs). The second highest sale was a black-on-black 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air convertible with fuel injection. It brought $115,560. Sales vehicles were generally post-war and newer models. Old guys like a 1917 Auburn 6-39 five-passenger touring car sold for $11,880, and a 1918 Dodge Brothers touring car sold for $6,480. A handsome 1932 Hudson Terraplane did not attract the same attention as flashy, high-powered muscle from the 1950s and 1960s and did not sell. A white 1987 Avanti II convertible with black top was among the more unusual cars. A mauve 1963 Oldsmobile Starfire by Richard Zocchi attracted a lot of attention and a buyer, for $38,340. Another Zocchi creation, a chiffon-yellow 1957 Buick Special, brought $47,520. A near-perfect 1954 black-on-black Buick Roadmaster convertible sold for $84,240. A burgundy-and-black Ford Crestliner from 1950 inspired a range of sale price guesses by observers, from less than $10,000 to close to $30,000. One detractor pointed out the hard rubber sealing inside the doors and windows and the shabby appearance of structural areas. It was a no-sale; bidding stopped at $30,000. Perhaps 50 feet away, awaiting its turn on the auction block, a 1951 two-tone green Ford Victoria two-door hardtop eventually went for $30,780. An auction visitor wistfully circled it, recalling an identical vehicle he had purchased in the late 1950s. The third weekend in May, RM Auctions will collaborate for the first time with Sotheby's in a Ferrari sale in Maranello, Italy. RM spokesman Terry Lobson said Edsel Ford will have a Ferrari in that event. There will be opportunities for serious bidders to drive the cars prior to the Sunday sale.
