Laid-back Blossom Heath car show

1963 CorvetteST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. -- The annual Blossom Heath Car Show in St. Clair Shores is a laid-back affair that usually caps the old-car show season each fall.

This year’s event, the 10th Annual show sponsored by the Lakeshore Chapter of the Veteran Motor Car Club of America (VMCCA), was no exception. It was a non-judged show, with trophies awarded by the persons or businesses sponsoring the trophies. Blossom Heath, a City Park located on Lake St. Clair, is beautiful in autumn.

No fee is charged for walk-in visitors and registration was limited to the first 200 cars. Door prizes were given out throughout the day, and the trophies are awarded at 4:PM.

For a low-key show, a number of very nice vehicles show up, ranging from special interest cars from the ‘20s, ‘30s and ‘40s, hot rods, finned cars from the ‘50s and muscle cars from the ‘60s and ;70s.

A little local history was represented by a 1926 Ford Model T roadster pickup. Titled as a 1925 model but actually a 1926, it was used for years by Hughie “Mac” McAllister, proprietor of J.L. Lumber on Harper in St. Clair Shores. It now belongs to Chuck and Ginger Mitchell.

1953 Pontiac HearseA 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray at the show has been owned for 40 years by Jeanne Omelenchuk, a champion speed skater who won a berth on the 1960, 1968 and 1972 U.S. winter Olympic skating teams. A former teacher in Detroit Public Schools, she holds the U.S. one-mile record – 1.52 minutes -- which she posted in St. Paul, Minnesota.

A 7/8-scale replica of a '36 Mercedes-Benz convertible was built on a '76 Ford Mustang V-6 chassis by its owner, Mike Lazaria of Clinton Township, Mich.

Other interesting cars at Blossom Heath included a 1948 Chevrolet Fleetmaster club coupe owned by Ben Felczak; a classic 1928 Packard phaeton owned by Richard Gordon; a '35 Ford V-8 cabriolet convertible with rumble seat which belongs to Mildred Ryckman-Rathka; a mildly flamed 1952 Plymouth Cranbrook owned by Harry Schwenter; and a rare 1959 Ford Skyliner Retractable Hardtop Convertible, owned by Ken Novak, which cost $4,689.20 new.
