Italian designer puts his mark on classic Mustang

Italian Mustang ConceptLOS ANGELES, Cal. -- Inspire a renowned Italian coachbuilder with a classic pony car and the result is bellissimo: The Mustang by Giugiaro.

When Fabrizio Giugiaro, the styling director of ItalDesign -- Giugiaro S.pA., first saw the 2005 Mustang, he knew he wanted to interpret his vision of it, said Ford officials, who added they were eager to see it.

Ford worked with Giugiaro's legendary father, Giorgetto, who created the 1965 Bertone Mustang. The two worked on this project.

On Tuesday night, this concept muscle car spread its wing-doors for the first time when Ford unveiled it the evening before the start of the Los Angeles Auto Show.

ItalDesign completed the exterior design in about four months in Turin, Italy, which includes the single-curved glass panel that connects the windshield and rear window. The interior wraps leather in Italian luxury and style. Ford Racing technologies added the twin-screw supercharged 4.6 liter V-8 to stay true to is American roots, delivering nearly 500 horsepower.
