Black ConvertibleST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. -- A cool, clear evening and enthusiastic participants and onlookers proved the annual Harper Cruise continues to gain traction, in spite of its late-August date -- Wednesday, Aug. 30.

The parking lots of businesses lining Harper Avenue here roughly from Eight Mile road to a half mile north of 10 Mile were filled with spectators on lawn chairs and special vehicles which were not actually cruising.

The cruise is at least six years old and serves as a fund raiser for charities that benefit children, said Dick Forton, owner of Forton's Lawn Mower Service.

Forton's corner lot was jammed with great cars - mostly hot rods, and hungry guests who filled their plates with chicken wings, sloppy joes and summer salads while watching the more energetic cruisers blasting up and down Harper.

Forton said the cruise included more participation by neighborhood businesses this year than in 2005. It is partly sponsored by the local Kiwanis Club.
