57 Chevy

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- It was Jeep Night at the cruise-in hosted by the Walter P. Chrysler Museum, but the parking lot was dominated by 1957 Chevrolets, whose owners included the fortnightly event at the rival automaker's museum in their big weekend celebration of the 50th anniversary of an American automotive icon.

The '57 Chevys that showed up included a fire truck built by the Boardman Fire Truck Co. of Oklahoma City on a 1957 Chevrolet truck chassis. The truck's current owner, Bryan McDonald of Claremore, Okla., said the truck had been in regular service until seven years ago, when it was retired and sold to a local antique dealer. When the dealer closed his business, McDonald, himself a member of the Claremore Fire Department, bought the truck, which is unrestored but in full operating condition.

The Chrysler Museum is staging a series of six cruise-ins this summer, each with a theme. The Jeep Night was the fifth in the series, which concludes Aug. 23 with Truck Night running from 6-9 p.m. In addition to the cars on display, the museum is open during the cruise-in.

Jeep showcased five of its recent concept vehicles in front of the museum, with the Gladiator, Hurricane, Jeepster, Rescue and Trailhawk on display.

On Truck Night, the Gladiator will be joined by three Dodge concept trucks - the M80, the Power Wagon and the Rampage.
